A couple of years ago, some friends and I had lunch at a great pizza place. Over our meal, we discussed the idea of taking turns helping each other with home improvement projects. We would rotate homes, and you had to participate on another house to have the favor returned. The host house would also provide breakfast and lunch. We we're being clever naming the idea, and "Habitat for Insanity" was born!
Our first HFI was August of 2006, and we've had five total. Projects have included installing blinds, removing toilets, stripping wallpaper, lots of landscaping and yard work, installing ceiling fans and light fixtures. Our house has benifitted from lots and lots of yardwork, deck staining, kitchen painting and light fixture installation.
Today was Davene's turn again for her second installment of HFI! On the agenda was installing more blinds, cleaning gutters, planting shrubs, wiping cabinets, removing curtains and cornice boards from the 80s and installing a garbage disposal!
Guess who installed the garbage disposal! That's right! Davene and me! The husband (the only boy there today) was installing blinds (a very time consuming job) and cleaning gutters! I was a little nervous that we wouldn't be able to get the disposal installed, but we did it (with some man-strength assistance from hubbo (he rotated the disposal off and held it up while we installed it in the new slot)!
An oldie but a goodie! The original 1970s disposal. Thankfully, it is (was) the only burnt orange item and 70's relic in Davene's kitchen!
Yes, that is me doing electrical work. I'm an electrician's daughter. It's in my genes. I'm just glad the thing didn't trip the breaker when we turned it on! It was three wires and Davene and I can match, so we were in good shape!
Us and our handiwork! Yes, it did work. The hardest part was getting the old disposal off the old back face plate and the new disposal on the new back face plate! Thanks hubbo for the help here!
Davene and the plumber's putty snake! Oh yeah, we took out the sink face plate too. This was a complete disposal replacement! We rock!
26 step instructions...we read them, we're girls!

More fun with the open drain!

2 things to read...:
that's awesome!! I'm so impressed. I helped Will do ours and it was NOT easy, of course we were taking out pipe and junk from a 1950's kitchen, yuck! anyway, plumber's putty is no joke! :) I have to agree, i love electrical work, although I'm sure I'm not quite at your level, I still try. I installed new light fixtures and sockets in our house, woohoo! You go girl!
Thanks! We broke one of the old O rings on the piping and were going to have to make a run the hardware store, but we found one in some stuff we took out from the sink! Those pipe fittings are tought cookies to mess with! We were so thankful that God put the O ring there for us so we could get the installation finished! Oh, I leave all the major wiring, like what you did, to the husband. Or I just wait until my dad's in town! LOL I'm a chicken!
